If you have a reservation it is easy! You begin: My name is… I have reservation. If you don’t have a reservation, you have to ask for a room by saying: I would like a…
My name is Durand. I have a reservation. It’s for three nights. A single room with shower and toilet. Could I have an early morning call, please? Good luck! |

Women and Small Business - 11 Never Mind the Balalaikas - 7 Death Penalty - 5 Enjoyable Place - 3 В этом выпуске мы опять публикуем две статьи. The Death Penalty: Morally Defensible? The death penalty has faced much opposition as of late. Can the death penalty possibly be a morally acceptable punishment? A popular bumper sticker says, "We kill people to show people that killing people is wrong." The slogan is short, simple, and to the point. But is there really such irony in capital punishment as the slogan implies? First of all, the slogan misses an important point. The death penalty does not punish people for killing, but for murder. Killing is justified when it is done in self-defense. Killing means to cause death. Murder is "the unlawful and malicious or premeditated killing of one human being by another." Kill and murder are not interchangeable terms. Death penalty opponents (hereafter "opponents") would like us to believe otherwise. Just because two actions result in the same end does not make them morally equivalent. If it were so, legal incarceration would be equated with kidnapping, lovemaking with rape, self-defense with assault, etc.1 Therefore, the slogan is better stated, "We execute people to show people that murder is wrong." Not quite as catchy, is it? Morality is defined as "the principles of right and wrong." As moral creatures, humans deserve praise for good deeds, and punishment for bad ones. Punishment may range from a slap on the wrist to death, but the punishment must fit the crime. Morally, it is wrong to incarcerate someone for murder. A sentence of life in an air-conditioned, cable-equipped prison where a person gets free meals three times a day, personal recreation time, and regular visits with friends and family2 is a slap in the face of morality. People will say here that not all prisons are like the one cited. This betrays an ignorance, however, of current trends. Eventually, criminal rights activists will see to it that all prisons are nice places to go. But regardless of the conditions of a particular prison, someone who murders another human being can only be made to pay for his actions by forfeiting his own life. This is so, simply because a loss of freedom does not and cannot compare to a loss of life. In reality, the murderer actually gets off easy when he is sentenced to death. Executions in this country are performed by lethal injection and electrocution. If a person is lethally injected, he is first put to sleep, and then he is administered drugs that will stop his heart. If a person faces the electric chair, he is dead within seconds (180 seconds max). Compare this to the heinous crimes of the murderer, where often the victim will go through excruciating pain for minutes, hours, or sometimes days. Superlatives!
A selection of extraordinary 'mind and body' world records.
The shortest.
One of the shortest men was an
American. Calvin Philips(1891-1912) weighed less than one kilo at the birth
and stopped growing when he was five years old. For the rest of his
brief life he was just 67 centimetres tall.
The shortest women was even smaller. Pauline Musters
(1876-1895) came fram Holland and measured only 61 centimetres when she
was nineteen.
The tallest.
The tallest man was an American called Robert Wadlow(1918-1940).
His height? An incredible 2 metres, 72 centimetres.
The tallest women came fram China. She was born in
1964, her name was Zeng Jinlian and when she died in 1982 she measured 2
metrs, 47 centimetres.
The tallest tribes both come from Africa. One of them is
Dinka, who live in Sudan. The other is the Watusi, who live in Rwanda and Burundi.
The average height for Watusi man is 1 metre, 95 centimetres and for a
Watusi woman it's 1 metre 77 centimetres.
The heaviest.
The world's heaviest human being was John Brower
Minnoch(1941-83) from the state of Washington, U.S.A. In 1976 he
weighed 442 kilos. The heaviest woman - Rosie Carnemolla of New York - was
born in 1944. Her maximum weight? It was 385.5 kilos on 13 March 1988.
The heavist organs in the human body are (a) the skin(yes, doctors call skin
an 'organ'), (b) the liver. The average human skin weights approximately 2.7
kilos and the average liver weighs 1.5 kilos... that's four times more than
a normal heart.
The most.
The most children born to one mother is 69. That's
the number of babies which an eighteenth centyry Russian woman
had in the years between 1720-60. They included 16 pairs of twins, 7 sets of
triplets (three babies) and 4 sets of quadruplets (four babies).
The oldest.
The oldest person was a
Japanese man called Shigechiuyo Izumi. He was born on 29 June 2865
and he died 120 yearsand 237 days later on 21 February 1986. The world's
oldest mother - Ruth Alice Kistler (U.S.A.) gave birth to a daughter on 18
October 1956 when she was 57 years and 129 days old.
The longest.
The longest bone in the human body is the
thigh bone or femur. Robert Wadlow's femur (remember him?- he was the
world's tallest man) measured 74 centimetres.
The longest fingernails are on the left hand of Shridar Chillal from India. Added together, their total length is 4.52 metres. The world's record for the longest hair also belongs to someone from India. Her name is Mata Jagdamba and in March 1989 her hair was 6.4 metres long. The longest beard - 5.3 metres - was grown by a Norwegian man called Hans N.Langseth. M.Langseth died in 1927 and 40 years later his beard was presented to an American museum.
How long can you stand up for? The world record belongs
to Swami Maujgiri Maharaj from ... you guessed it ... India. He stood for
17 years in the period 1955-73. How did he sleep? By leaning against a
plank.
The strongest.
The strongest
substance in the human body is tooth enamel (that's the hard white substance
on the surface of teeth).
Can you guess where the strongest muscles in the
body are? Well, the answer is in the jaw. They're the muscles which
are used for chewing and biting.
The most unuseal.
The most unuseal diet in the
world is that of Frenchman Michel Lotito (born 1950) who regularly eats
metal and glass. Latito has eaten all of the things on this list since
1966...
