Khabarovsk is one of the majour cities of Far East, founded in 1858 by Muraviev-Amursky, beside the Amur river. The name commemorates a cossak pioneer, who reached the point in 1649. Khabarovsk is the administraty cente of the Khabarovsk Territory straches 44 kilometers along the right bank of the Amur river. All them it is a distance 800 km from the sea it has become a sea port as well, because the ships of the sea type sail to the ports of the sea of Ohotsk and even to Japan.
When getting aqquainted with Khabarovsk we are shown the impressive minument of Erofey Khabarov. The sculpture was projected by Milchin. Khabarov was one of the most brilliant explorers of the XVII century.
He was a real man of state intellect. It was in honour of Erofey Khabarov that one of the Amur settlements which appeared in 1858 was named Khabarovka. At that time the Russians were begining to intensively developing Priamurie. At thist it was a military post. With time Khabarovka grew with the city and was renamed to Khabarovsk.
First time visitors to the city usually want to see the famous places they have read or heard about. Every sightseeing tour of a big city includes visits to places of historical interest. There are many such places in Khabarovsk. Some of them are: the monument of Erofey Khabarov, the memorial to the heroes of the civil war in Komsomolskaya square, the memorial stell and the eternal flame in the Glory square.
What can excite the visitors’ interest? Of course the magnificent arcitecture of outstanding man: Nikolay Nikolaevich Muraviev-Amursky, the general governor of Far Easten Siberia and the Far East in the middle of the XIX century. A memorial was erected to commemorate the glorious personality who brilliantly served his country. This monunent was erected on the high bank of the Amur river and dates back to the 30 of May, 1891. There is a magnificent view from thhis place. The memorial stands near magnificent parks and impressed greatly and make ictures of this statue. Muraviev-Amursky suggested that the network of railway should be built in the Far East. He dreamed about of the opening navigation down to the Amur river. The early monument was made by a famous sculpture, academition and matimation Opikushin. The destiny of this monument was tragic. During the years of soviet power it was destroyed, but by the end of eighties according initiative of the public it was rebuilt. The high of the statue is 5 meters. The authors of it are the spesialists from St.Peterburg. The contribution of Muraviev-Amursky into the history of Khabarovsk territory is so considerable that it should be commemorated. This monument and the name of central street of Khabarovsk is a part of our history.
